Smoked salmon can be a great option if you are looking for a delicious treat while still following a healthy, clean eating, Paleo or another sugar free, additive free or grain free diet. There is no reason that smoked salmon can’t be made with high quality ingredients like alaskan and wild caught salmon. Many traditional versions of smoked salmon also use a brine that contains no sugar or other additives.
Unfortunately, it does seem that the majority of smoked salmon products available in major grocery stores and elsewhere do contain sugar, additives like nitrates and/or nitrites as well as using cheaper farmed Atlantic salmon and other ways of putting profits over product quality.
